Dianne Jacoby is a wonderful storyteller, and she has just put finishing touches on “Florida: The First Five Hundred Years.” The story is told through the eyes of three women, each wearing the elaborate clothing of her time period. First is Dona Maria, illegitimate daughter of Florida's Spanish founder Pedro Menendez, who tells of the 1513 discovery of La Florida, the bloody battles fought for Spanish dominance of Florida, and the challenges of life in the isolated colony of Saint Augustine. The 1700's saw vicious attacks by pirates and occupation by the British, recounted by flamboyant Sarah Fish, wife of an infamous black-marketeer and real estate scoundrel. Finally, Mary Lily Flagler, wife of Henry Morrison Flagler, talks about Florida during the wars between Florida cow hunters and the Seminole nation, Florida's quest for statehood, the dire poverty of post-Civil War years, and finally, the challenge of Florida's last role as the tropical jewel, which continues to draw visitors and settlers.

If you’ve ever even thought about writing a book, you’ll want to attend our February forum “Write That Book!” Circle Wednesday, February 8, 2:00 PM on your calendar for the event that may change your life. It will be hosted by Dr. Michelle Donice, newly published author of The Other Side of Through and professor of English at Daytona State College, and will feature a panel of local writers. Panelists will include a poet, a writer of fiction, a non-fiction author, and a self-published writer, to give aspiring authors inspiration for whichever genre they are pursuing. Topics will include daily writing routines, writing query letters, dealing with writer's block, and using social media to promote your books. Michelle Donice is an inspiring teacher as well as an accomplished fiction writer and will draw participants from last year’s “Meet the Authors Festival” to present a lively and thought-provoking event for anyone who ever thought they might have a book in them!

Please join us!
~Carol Johnson

Friends Holiday Book Sale - Another Huge Success

Our annual FOL Holiday Book Sale was a great success, netting over $1,900.

Members of Friends were given early access.
Not only did the Book Sale generate money for purchasing needed items for our library, but FOL membership increased as many patrons joined FOL while attending the sale.

I personally wish to thank the wonderful group of Book Sale volunteers: Tom Stephens, Dee Decarlo, Carol Johnson, Carla Topper, Barb Smith, Chris Hartley, Barb Miller, Audrie Beck, Bev Schlect, Daisy Wilson, Peg Mercurio, and Jane Finchum.

And our special thanks to Lew Dabe for all his hard work before and after the Book Sale, lifting and moving cartons while setting up and breaking down the event.

We appreciate the continued support of our Friends and patrons.

Until the next Book Sale, you are encouraged to drop by the Book Sale Room located behind the Librarian Information Desk for books, magazines, VHS and DVDs.

~Judie Korsch

Children's & Young Adults' Events

Children’s Department: Thanks to the generosity of our Friends who supply us with so much, the Children’s Section is able to offer many programs for the children of Ormond Beach. I hope you had a wonderful holiday with friends and family.

For this and several future articles, I would like to share with you a bit of the history of our Ormond Beach Library. You will be interested in the background of our existing facility.

Part 1: On January 9, 1892 sixteen Ormond citizens met at the Ormond Union Church on N. Beach Street and organized the Ormond Village Improvement Association (V.I.A.) for the benefit of Ormond residents. Mrs. Joseph Price was elected president and Mr. James Carnell was asked to draft a constitution.

In April 1892, the V.I.A. rented for a fee of $100 a year, a dwelling at what is presently 103 Lincoln Avenue. The largest room was used as a free public library and reading room. This combined library and reading room was kept open all the time on the honor system allowing readers to check out and return books at their convenience.

In 1894 a house, on the site of the current club house, was purchased for $1200. The large front room became the Public Library and Reading Room. Shelves were placed for the accumulated books. For current reading, the club subscribed to two dailies and eight of the best magazines.

In March 1910, Miss Margaret Howe, whose interest was centered in the library, gave to the club her home on New Britain Avenue. And, in 1912 the V.I.A. sold their building and the house donated by Miss Howe to help finance a new building.

In 1916 through the combined efforts of V.I.A. members and Friends, a new building was erected at an approximate cost of $7,700. Space was designated for the public library and reading room. In appreciation for the assistance given by John Anderson and Joseph B. Price, the library was given the name “The Anderson-Price Memorial Library.”

Look for the next installment of the history of the Ormond Beach Library in the next newsletter.
~Lucy Jackman
